Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON) is seeking an experienced financial leader to oversee the development and implementation of its finance function, including strategies, plans, methods, tools, and processes to meet the overall strategic plans and priorities for the agency.  Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, you will be responsible for the delivery of the finance function, ensuring consistency with overall department performance measures, standards, and best practices. 

In this hands-on role, you will be key in directing the development, implementation and oversight of financial analysis, controllership and reporting systems, internal policies, and standards including processes and controls for enhancing IPON’s finance capability 

 Responsibilities include:  

  • Providing leadership in the setting and monitoring of financial targets and the analysis and reporting of the financial performance of each function and provides overall leadership of financial audits.  
  • Accountable for ensuring integration and compliance with applicable legislative requirements, GAAP, and audit requirements to manage risk, particularly in the context of a broader public sector entity. 
  • Developing the financial operational plan, reporting on performance metrics, program effectiveness, risks and impacts related to the finance function.  
  • Leading and/or participating on projects within the organization to represent the department’s interests in financial decision making, e.g., accounting/financial implementation. 
  • Developing collaborative partnerships and strong working relationships with senior officials in the OPS, BPS and other public and private sector organizations to liaise with on financial matters. 

 Successful candidates will demonstrate the following:  

  • A postsecondary degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or similar, or relevant experience. 
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA) or equivalent experience with a relevant graduate degree. 
  • Proven and demonstrated financial leadership experience along with progressive and/or financial experience in financial planning, controllership and audit. 
  • Demonstrated experience working within a complex funding and reporting framework within a public sector setting is an asset.  
  • An understanding of how provincial, federal and potentially global changes in IP may impact the financial strategies and allocation of resources for the agency. 
  • Ability to analyze complex and sensitive financial information and present comprehensive financial reports to the CFO, CEO, Board, senior management team, etc.  
  • Ability to anticipate emerging financial issues, assesses their nature, complexity, scope and degree of short/long term impacts on business to analyze multiple impacts and pro-actively identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies where precedents may be limited. 

IPON is in the start up stage and anticipates being a hybrid agency, with the main office location to be determined shortly.
